Happy List: #342

orange tulips in ireland

Hello, hello! Welcome to this week’s Happy List. I’m so glad you are here.

This week on the blog I shared some tips, six to be exact, on how to install a split ceiling medallion. It’s pretty niche advice for a project most people will skip over and install a regular ceiling medallion instead. Niche advice is my forte. Ha!

I also wrote about the six things (an inadvertent number theme) we found inside the stone walls of our basement. I’d like to think we’re done finding things in the walls. As long as we don’t open up anymore walls, that will be a true statement.

As always, thank you for being here. It’s so rewarding to connect with each and every one of you. I’ve made the best online friends through this website. If you want to connect with us, and I hope you do, you can always comment on this blog post or send an email here. You can also reach out on Instagram or Facebook.

Enjoy this week’s Happy List!

OUTDOOR SHOWER

How do you feel about outdoor showers? I’m a big fan under the right conditions.

If we live here long enough, we’d put an outdoor shower by the pool or connected to our Carriage House. This outdoor shower is by Falling Waters Landscape and you can see more photos of this space here.

DIY RAW STONE EARRINGS

A 5-minute craft that looks expensive and you can wear it? Sign me up.

Get the tutorial on how to make these raw stone earrings over at Alice and Lois. These would make a pretty Mother’s Day gift.

STONE IDEAS

Speaking of stone, I’m not opposed to any of the stone ideas in this bathroom designed by House of Rolison. I especially like how the bathroom vanity baseboards are wrapped in marble. If budget was not an issue…

Go check out more photos of this gorgeous home over at Domino.

CHARGED

We just got this portable car battery charger in case I ever have to jumpstart my car and it’s one of those ‘I’m alone’ situations. Handy Husband thought it would give both of us a little peace of mind.

There have been hiking and camping situations where we have thought, “It would be hard to get car help out here.” One less thing to worry about!

P.S. Handy Husband was a little horrified when I asked him which color goes on which part of the battery. There went his peace of mind. In my defense, I’ve never hooked up the cables myself before. Let’s hope I never have to.

DID YOU KNOW?

I’m not sure that it is relevant now, but speeding tickets for horses used to be a thing.

Ulysses S. Grant seems to have had quite the lead foot back in the day and there is documentation of at least two arrests for “exercising his fast gray nag” according to this article by the National Park Service.

It was a $20 fine, which is $393 in today’s dollars.

Ride responsibly, folks.

CLEVER BED STORAGE

I have never seen a bed storage or concealment solution quite like this one.

One bed in this home can push into the wall to make more floor space. The cavity where the bed goes is the underside of a platform bed in the next room. It’s a very specific and creative solution.

Go see more photos of how this works over at My Scandinavian Home. The article explains it much better!

BASKET

This upcycled denim basket from White Flower Farm is the prettiest example of repurposed denim that I’ve probably ever seen. Something about the stitching in a contrasting color from the denim sets the basket apart.

By the way, this is for sale. It’s not a DIY. Although, I”ll bet one of you crafty individuals could make something like this.

I JUST LEARNED

Pigeons produce milk. Did you know that?

But did you know both the female AND male pigeon produce milk? That’s right. Both. Seems smart to me.

It’s called crop milk and they basically throw it up into their baby’s mouth. Tasty.

If you find an abandoned baby pigeon, a pigeon rescue center will make a pigeon milk formula to feed the baby so it doesn’t die. I don’t know what it tastes like.

The only reason why I know so much about pigeons this week is that I listened to not one but two podcasts about pigeons. I didn’t know they were so interesting until I started down this journey.

Ologies had a two-part series on Columbidology, the study of pigeons, that was fascinating. You can find it wherever you listen to podcasts or on the Ologies website. Thank me later.

KITCHEN GARDEN

My toxic trait is that I would like a kitchen garden without having to do the work. Magazines never show the work part of gardening.

I did like this article in Sunset about a kitchen garden in California. Everything was so pretty!

I’m considering adding herbs to the potted flowers I put on my porch this year. It will be a mini kitchen garden without all the commitment of raised beds.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

“Someday, when my children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a mother, I’ll tell them: I loved you enough to bug you about where you were going, with whom and what time you would get home. … I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover your friend was a creep. I loved you enough to make you return a Milky Way with a bite out of it to a drugstore and confess, ‘I stole this.’ … But most of all I loved you enough to say no when you hated me for it. That was the hardest part of all.” – Erma Bombeck

Thank you for reading today’s Happy List.

Be good to yourself and others this weekend.

I’ll see you back here on Monday.
