    The Happy List #2: Podcasts

Do you listen to podcasts? I didn’t, not regularly, until we moved to Ireland. Now, I have a fair amount of solitary time during my walking commute, riding the train, etc. Earbuds are kind of like the uniform for solitary commuters. Put earbuds in, don’t make eye contact with fellow travelers and mind your own business. Basically, it’s an introvert’s dream. What’s not an introvert’s dream? Calling attention to one’s self. THIS IS WATER: 2005 Commencement Address by David Foster Wallace My husband and I were mesmerized by this commencement speech. Take the time to listen to it and I guarantee it will give you many things to think about. “The point here is that I think this is one part of what teaching me how to think is really supposed to mean. To be just a little less arrogant. To have just a little critical awareness about myself and my certainties. Because a huge percentage of the…

Dear Teachers and Things That Make Me Happy: Part 3

This is one of those random posts with a little bit of this happy and a little bit of that happy. 1. Dear Teachers: You’re Not Fooling Me blog post Candice of Alamo City Moms Blog wrote a fantastic, worth-your-time post on really “seeing” your child’s teacher. Seeing the effort they put into their classroom, their lesson plans, educating your child. As she puts it, “we’re in this together” and it is so true. Photo source 2. Sarcasm Is Good For You, So Says Harvard Study Photo Source I knew it! In a nutshell, this study says when there is a baseline of trust between two people, decoding sarcastic remarks promotes…
