Happy List #11
Here’s to Friday! My children received positive feedback during our first ever parent-teacher conferences in an Irish school, so I’m quite happy with that. Apparently they are doing a great job learning to speak Irish even though I hear none of it at home. Go figure. On the blog this week I shared Valentine’s Day Card ideas that both boys and girls would like to receive and I also shared a recipe and story about making Dill Bread. Here are the other things making me all happy and humored this week. Does Being Pessimistic Makes You Happier? Food for thought. Alain de Botton’s premise is interesting. As a bonus, I found…
Happy List #10
Hello! I hope you had a great week. In case you missed it, this week on the blog I shared my creative use for a shower curtain and what to see and do if you visit Copenhagen, Denmark, with children. This was earth-shattering information, folks. I can wait while you get caught–oh, who am I kidding? I have the patience of a toddler! Let’s get on with it. Here’s what’s on my Happy List this week. As usual, it’s quite random…just the way I like it. Papadag – Daddy Day One day a week, dads in The Netherlands take the day off work to spend time with their kids. Say what??? Apparently, this…
Happy List #7: Let’s Not Stress Out
How are you? It’s December! Or, as my kids put it, time to start the chocolate advent calendar! They’ve been counting down the days until they can start counting down the days until Christmas, so this has been an exciting week. Here’s what’s on my Happy List today: POSITIVE FASHION FOR KIDS Free To Be Kids is a Seattle-based company and I love what they stand for. From their site: “We celebrate intelligence and grit in our girls because their worth is based on so much more than just their cuteness. We celebrate kindness in our boys because they’re more than just troublemakers and athletes…At Free to Be Kids, we believe passionately that both…
The Happy List #6: Int’l Black Friday and Other Randoms
How are you? TGIF! For all my American friends, how was your Thanksgiving? Are you joining the throngs of Black Friday shoppers today? I admit I thought Black Friday was an American thing. Imagine my surprise when I saw Black Friday advertisements here in Ireland. Hello, globalization. I’m not a journalist, but I did a quick Wikipedia search…so thorough over here. I learned that while the shopping form of Black Friday does seem to have its roots in the U.S., Black Friday is indeed more widespread than I thought. Canadian retailers have adopted Black Friday in response to Canadians driving across the U.S./Canada border in search of holiday deals. Romania, India,…
The Happy List #6
Here’s what been swirling around in my brain this week. The Crown on Netflix People. I devoured this show. As in give my children cereal for dinner and let them skip baths so I could eek out a few more minutes to watch this show. Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth was mesmerizing. By her facial expressions alone you were sucked into her world and I could feel how conflicting and burdensome it must have been for her to assume the duty of Queen. Then don’t even get me started on John Lithgow as Winston Churchill. They both should be winning awards for this series. The only thing I didn’t like was that there were only 10…
The Happy List #5: A Story and Boots
We here at A Pretty Happy Home (and by we, I mean me) are not very trendy and we definitely aren’t going to win any fashion awards for moms. But I do love shoes. They make an outfit, don’t they? I’ve learned the hard way that some shoes are designed to look good while walking to and from the car, but they are not designed for walking miles and miles per day. Case in point. A couple of months ago it was a beautiful, sunny day in Ireland and I had a pair of leopard print flats that I really wanted to wear, so I did. They were fine for about a…

The Happy List #2: Podcasts
Do you listen to podcasts? I didn’t, not regularly, until we moved to Ireland. Now, I have a fair amount of solitary time during my walking commute, riding the train, etc. Earbuds are kind of like the uniform for solitary commuters. Put earbuds in, don’t make eye contact with fellow travelers and mind your own business. Basically, it’s an introvert’s dream. What’s not an introvert’s dream? Calling attention to one’s self. I’m prone to busting out in song if I listen to music and that would be a BIG violation of the solitary commuter code. That leaves podcasts. There is an entire world behind that little podcast icon on your phone or tablet.…
The Happy List
Very sporadically I like to share some of the random things that put the happy in my day. Here’s what I’m digging this week… WOMEN WHO RULE – Netflix Ad This. All of this. Since getting rid of TV service 6 years ago, I don’t see a ton of TV commercials. It says a lot that I willingly watched an advertisement. As a side note, if you want to have a television set in your home in Ireland, you have to pay an annual tax of 160 euros. https://youtu.be/tw2-K8w8l7I FREE BARBIE CLOTHING SEWING PATTERNS I’m not sure if I should throw Barbie in here with Netflix’s strong women ad, but hey, I’m…
